Tulip Painting on Canvas

When Clever Gal can't afford the things she wants, she makes them. It's a good thing she's not a perfectionist...

I had always wanted to try painting. The vintage wall mural was my first attempt at it and I used an overhead projector and transparency for most of the process.  Then when I moved I had to paint over her. Oh, the agony. So now I'm on to painting on canvas.

I deliberately left a very blank wall over my couch so that I could hang a large painting over it. But it's not easy to find a painting that goes with pink and lime green and if you do find it, it's not big enough for the space or not small enough for the wallet. That's a job for Clever Gal, if ever there was one. But first I had to practice. This painting was going to be in a prime location. It had to be presentable. So I started with a smaller project for the basement guest room. That way only people who were invited far enough into the house to see the guest room would ever have to see it--the cable guy would not have the honour.

The trial run. I used stickers and painted over them in red to get the white flower reveal. They needed quite a bit of touching up since, wouldn't you know it, stickers curl up when you get them wet. I'm rather pleased with my clever brush technique.

Now that I have clearly mastered the art of painting it's time to move on to the show piece. I took a photo of some tulips a while back and they would serve as my subject. I used the overhead projector method again, but this time it only worked for a basic outline. After that I couldn't really see much of the details so I turned it off and worked off the original photo. And here it is!

There are some things I would do differently with regards to the composition, but I'm generally happy with it. Happy enough to hang it prominently in my house! If all else fails, I just admit to having done it myself and everyone thinks it's a great effort.
