In July 2009 some friends generously packed me in their
car and let me tag along for their road trip from Toronto to Twillingate,
Newfoundland. It took three days, including the 10-hour delay at the
ferry in North Sydney, Nova Scotia.
We started with a stunning detour around the Cabot Trail
in Nova Scotia. |

A stopover for some true Newfoundlander hospitality in
Gander, brought us to the tranquil Cobbs Pond for a short walk. |
 |
 |
|
After leaving Gander, we stopped in at the Beothuk
Indian Interpretive Centre for some education and another trail, this
one with an abundance of well-labelled, native flora and fauna. |

|
Our primary destination was the picturesque little
island of Twillingate, off the northeast coast of Newfoundland. |

Aside from the amazingly friendly people and the lovely
landscape, the big draw in Twillingate is the icebergs... |

The next day this berg broke into pieces. |

One morning we stumbled upon these fishermen at French
Beach in Twillingate. They were waiting for the capelin to come in.
Certainly one of the easier fish to catch: just sit and wait for the
fish to come to you. |

took of capelin fishing and see how it's done.

The summer "food
fishery" opened while we were in town. These unsuspecting cod didn't
make it past the first day. |
|
On our way to Bonavista, we stopped in South Trouty to
walk the Sedgewick (?) trail. It's a little longer and tougher than the
others, but still very doable in a couple of hours. Well, worth it for
the enormous rock formations alone. The whale sightings were a bonus. |
 |
 |
 |
|
Also, just before you get to Bonavista, you MUST stop at
the town of Elliston. Puffins GALORE! Get up close and personal with the
"cartoon-ish" birds. |

Finally, just a few minutes past Elliston we arrived in
Cape Bonavista. And yes, it does look a lot like the end of the Earth. |
